Foreign ministers from Asia and Europe are set to open a two-day meeting in Kyoto, Japan on Friday afternoon to discuss regional issues, including North Korea's nuclear ambitions and democracy in Myanmar.
On the sidelines of the forum, South Korea's top diplomat Ban Ki-moon met with Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing, and reports say Minister Ban has asked Beijing to play a more active role in bringing North Korea back to the six-party disarmament talks.
Before attending the opening ceremony of the 7th ASEM ministerial meeting, Mr. Ban is scheduled to meet with Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura to discuss ways to repair frayed relations between the two countries that have been at odds over Tokyo's sovereignty claim of Dokdo and its glorification of wartime atrocities.
