Hwang Hong-ryon, a 57-year-old South Korean fisherman who crossed the Northern Limit Line (NLL) off the eastern coast in his 3.96-ton ship, was handed over to the South Korean maritime police Monday.

Sokcho Maritime Police said Monday that the North turned over Hwang and his ship, the Hwangman-ho, 3.2 miles northeast of Jeojin Port at 3:04 p.m. Hwang arrived in Sokcho at around 5:30 p.m. via a 250-ton patrol warship.

Hwang will be handed over to a joint investigation team comprised of the National Intelligence Service, Defense Security Command and police and undergo interrogation concerning his defection. Hwang, a resident of Sokcho, crossed the maritime borderline last Wednesday afternoon on his fishing boat, amidst warning shots by the South Korean Navy. Hwang is reportedly to have been dead drunk at the time.
