In Korea, forest fires which broke out around midnight Monday near Yangyang, some two hundred kilometers east of Seoul have been brought under control after spreading across the eastern mountainous areas of the peninsula.
Government officials confirmed Wednesday morning that the latest fires have been completely extinguished.
The fires, fueled by gusty winds and dry weather, have forced nearly 3,000 residents to evacuate their homes and burnt 180 hectares in the Yangyang area.
Meanwhile, efforts are still underway to put out brushfires near the Kosung area, and officials expect the flames will be put out by this afternoon.
There have been no reports of casualties so far, but the fires have destroyed several national treasures, including Naksan temple dating back more than a thousand years.
