Ministry Details Punishment for SMS Spammers

Spamming Gets Harder - a Little

The Ministry of Information and Communication has detailed steps it is taking as part of a war against certain kinds of unsolicited promotional approaches over the telephone.

The ministry said Wednesday it fined some operators of premium telephone services that sent unsolicited promotional text messages to cell phones a total of W720 million (US$720,000), and suspended or terminated 56 060 call services, which typically carry sexual content.

The ministry said it fined the companies between W15 million and W30 million for unsolicited approaches, the upper limit allowed by law. It said that it investigated unsolicited messages reported to the Korea Spam Response Center under the Korea Information Security Agency, adding it imposed bigger fines on spammers that operated more than one call service.

The ministry said it was investigating another 193 cases of unsolicited messages. It also plans to ask mobile operators to suspend or terminate 060 call services if they violate the new regulations.
