The Washington Post on Sunday confirmed it was Pakistan that sold uranium hexafluoride to Libya, not North Korea as earlier reported. It said the U.S. lied about Pakistan's role to South Korea and other nations in order to step up pressure on Pyongyang.
On Feb. 2, both the New York Times and Washington Post reported citing officials that the U.S. was convinced during analysis of Libyan nuclear materials handed over to Washington that North Korea sold Libya about two tons of uranium hexafluoride. Both papers reported that White House National Security Council Asia director Michael J. Green then briefed Korea, Japan and China that North Korea had sold nuclear material.
The Washington Post said the U.S. hid from Korea the fact that Pyongyang had sold the material to Pakistan in a transaction Washington regarded as a matter between two sovereign states. It reported the U.S. concealed that it was Pakistan which then made the sale to Libya because of the key role played by Pakistan in the arrest of Al Qaeda leaders. The paper added the U.S. "misled U.S. allies" to step up the pressure on North Korea.
