The government said Thursday it plans to honor the composer of Korea's national anthem, Ahn Eaktai, for his contribution to the nation's independence after the late composer's family turned the anthem's copyright over to the Korean people. It also wants to open a display dedicated to Ahn in the National Museum of Korea in October.

Korean Culture and Tourism Minister Chung Dong-chae met with composer's family and promised to do what he could to honor the family's desire to recognize Ahn as an independence fighter. The minister said he would also push plans to rename the music hall of Korean National University of the Arts "Ahn Eaktai Hall."

Meanwhile, the composer's 90-year-old widow Lolita Ahn, his third daughter Leonor, 53, and his grandson Miguel formally transferred the copyright of the anthem to the Korean people in a ceremony at the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
