Japanese Reconnaissance Plane Approaches Korean Airspace
Coming on the heals of an attempted intrusion by a Japanese light aircraft of the skies over the Dokdo Islets on Tuesday, Korean fighter jets were again scrambled Wednesday when a Japanese coast guard patrol aircraft came within 8 miles of the Korea Air Defense Identification Zone (KADIZ).

A government official said a formation of Korean fighter aircraft made a sortie around 12:40 p.m. Wednesday when a Japanese coast guard AC-95 came within 40 miles southeast of the Dokdo Islets.

According to relevant authorities, the Air Force's Master Control and Reporting Center (MCRC) ordered aircraft waiting on the ground to the islets after it discovered a flying object coming within 8 miles of the KADIZ. When the Japanese aircraft said it was making a regular patrol, the air force took no additional measures.

Military authorities said it was true that the patrol aircraft came unusually close to the KADIZ, but since its operations remained within Japan's air defense zone (JADIZ), one couldn't really make an issue out of it.
