World leaders in politics and business will take part in the Asian Leadership Conference organized by the Chosun Ilbo on March 3 and 4 to mark the newspaper¡¯s 85th anniversary.
Since the first announcements went out on Feb. 1, former Indonesian president Megawati Sukarnoputri and Taipei mayor Ma Ying-jeou have sent word that they will attend. Figures like former Japanese prime minister Nakasone Yasuhiro, former Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohammad, former New Zealand premier Jim Bolger, former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and ASEAN General Secretary Ong Keng Yong accepted earlier.
After the devastating South Asian tsunamis, Asia is searching for new plans for cooperation and rebuilding. The recently resurfaced North Korean nuclear issue also demands a wise solution. South Korea also stands at a national crossroad where it can either make the jump to fully developed status or suffer a setback. The conference will be an opportunity to search for answers to these challenges.
Panelists include former Japanese vice finance minister Sakakibara Eisuke, Harvard University professor and former U.S. Defense Department undersecretary Ashton Carter, Brookings Institute senior fellow Nicholas Lardy and Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences Executive Vice-President Zuo Xuejin. Texas Pacific Group CEO David Bonderman, former British ambassador to the U.N. Lord Richard and World Vision vice president Lynn Arnold will also attend.
Proceeds from the event will go to post-tsunami reconstruction. The Chosun Ilbo looks forward to much support and participation, from both locally and abroad.
