Action, romance, comedy, fantasy... These are the genres commonly featured in Korean comic books. Combined with unique characters and storytelling, they are one of the hottest-selling books in Korea. Now they are attracting readers in the United States.
In particular, Korean comics that dive into the world of fantasy and others featuring romantic relationships have been capturing the imaginations of young Americans since last summer, when Korean comics first hit bookstores.
Korean comic books have become the third most popular in the U.S., capturing a 5 percent share of the American market, following all-time American favorites like Batman and Superman, and Japanese comics called "manga."
Exports of Korean comic books reached US$6 million last year and industry watchers say that amount could surpass US$10 million this year, accounting for an 8 percent share of the U.S. market.
With the growing interest in Korean comic books overseas, there are increasing calls for talented Korean comic book artists to seek more opportunities to promote their works abroad. Others say efforts are also needed to break away from a common stereotype that Korean comic books often mimic Japanese comics.
