In another world first, LG Electronics (LGE) announced Thursday it developed a ¡°push-to-view¡±, or PTV, phone that allows users to engage in multi-user video conferencing. PTV phones, a development on PTT (push-to-talk) mobile phones using walkie-talkie technology, use third generation wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) to make multi-way video conferencing possible.
LGE said it is preparing to commercialize PTV services for major global mobile carriers offering WCDMA service. It estimates marketing of its 3G video conferencing phones will begin from the third quarter of 2005. LGE Mobile Communications President Park Mun-hwa said 3G PTV technology was spreading around the world together with LG¡¯s WCDMA technology. He said his company would play a leading role in expanding the global WCDMA market through continuous development of 3G technologies.
LG plans to demonstrate its PTV technology at the 3GSM World Congress 2005, Europe¡¯s most prestigious mobile communications conference, to be held in Cannes, France from Feb. 14 to Feb. 17.
PTV is different from existing one-way video conferencing technology in that it allows several users to send images in real time to several different users. The technology allows users not only to manage groups and select the number of people they would like to send images to, but also to invite other users to join video conferences in progress. Invitees in turn can accept or decline.
