Tapping of Hong Seok-hyun as Envoy to the U.S.
The U.S. government has granted agrement to South Korea's ambassador-designate to the United States, Hong Seok-hyun. Agrement is the diplomatic practice of seeking approval of an ambassadorial nominee from the other capital before dispatching him or her to the country.

A government official here in Seoul says under diplomatic protocol, Mr. Hong is expected to start his tenure in Washington D.C. around mid-February, after presenting his credentials to U.S. President George W. Bush.

The U.S. approval, which was given right after President Bush's second inaugural address, comes about a month after South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun appointed Hong, chairman of the Korean daily JoongAng Ilbo, as the new ambassador to the United States.
