Articles on the death of former Chinese Communist Party chief Zhao Ziyang were cut from foreign newspapers delivered in China, it was confirmed Wednesday. Chinese authorities blocked reports on Zhao's death from international broadcasters like CNN, BBC and NHK and scissored reports from overseas newspapers.
Korean newspapers like the Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, Maeil Business Newspaper and Korea Economic Daily, as well as international newspapers like the Financial Times, were delivered with pages covering Zhao's death excised.
An official from LG Electronics in China said all papers had a page missing, which turned out to have contained stories about Zhao's death. In the case of Korean papers delivered in the Beijing area, a Korean company handles import but the China National Publications Import & Export (Group) Corporation handles customs and distribution within China.
However, the Japanese Embassy said Japanese newspapers were delivered in normal condition. An embassy official said delivery of the country¡¯s papers in China is handled by a Japanese company.
