New HIV Infections in the Military on the Rise
Fifteen military personnel including two officers were found newly infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) last year, five more than the previous year, a member of the National Assembly¡¯s Defense Committee said Sunday.

According to a report submitted to Grand National Party lawmaker Song Young-sun by the Ministry of Defense, a total of 37 military personnel have been infected with HIV since 2000.

Between 2000 and 2002, only a small number of military personnel were discovered to have developed acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) - three in 2000, five in 2001, and four in 2002. But the number of infections grew sharply from 2003, and AIDS patients have numbered in double digits since then.

Of the 37 people infected, 34 have reportedly been discharged from the military.
