Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) operator TU Media Corp. will start a trial mobile television service via satellite at midnight Monday. Samsung Electronics Co. announced Sunday that it will launch sales of it ¡°SCH-B100¡± model, the first DMB mobile phone in Korea, priced at around W850,000.
The strength of DMB, tipped as one of the most important fields of next-generation communication, lies in its versatility. Through DMB service, viewers can watch video clips and listen to radio programs transmitted via satellite to mobile phones, PDAs, or car monitors.
TU Media plans to trial nine out of a total of 35 DMB channels from Monday, three of them video channels - YTN news, CJ Media¡¯s M-net, and Drama channel - and six audio channels playing the latest Korean pop, U.S pop, Korean oldies, American oldies, chart toppers, and Jazz & World.
During the test run, TU Media will make sure machines and system operate smoothly, and find out the most common places and time periods for customers to use the service. In accordance with Korea Broadcasting Commission regulations and policies, TU Media will roll out the full-scale service in May, the company said.
