A suicide car-bomb explosion in Baghdad near the headquarters of Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's political party has killed at least three people - two of them policemen. More than 20 others were wounded.
North of the capital, U.S. authorities say a separate car bombing at a checkpoint near a U.S. military base in Balad killed four Iraqi national guardsmen and wounded 14 others.
Officials say the Baghdad blast occurred at a security checkpoint on a street leading to offices of the Iraqi National Accord party. Hours later, a second car exploded nearby, but there were no immediate casualty reports.
Security officials say they expect an increase in insurgent attacks as Iraq's January 30 election approaches.
