A legal dispute over money borrowed to subsidize the gambling habits of a 54-year old man that he never repaid was settled Wednesday when the Seoul District Court ruled that Mr B did not have to pay back his debt to the woman, aged 44, who had lent it to him in good faith.
In its ruling statement, the 8th Civil Affairs Department said, ˇ°Mrs A lent W13.3 million to Mr B even though she was aware of the purpose for which he wanted to borrow the sum. As the money was provided to facilitate a violation of the law, it cannot be retrievedˇ±.
The man gambled away W7 million in May last year at a gaming table where the stakes were high at W34 million a game. He borrowed W13.3 million from Mrs A and subsequently lost the entire amount.
In February, both adults were ordered to pay W2 million under suspicion of aiding and engaging in gambling activities.
