U.S. Korea Expert Claims Cheong Wa Dae Official Rooted Against Bush
Nicholas Eberstadt, senior researcher at the prestigious U.S. think-tank American Enterprise Institute (AEI), said in an interview with Seoul Shinmun that it was said Cheong Wa Dae and the National Security Council viewed Bus's re-election as an emergency, and he himself knew of someone within Cheong Wa Dae who was hoping Bush's would fail in his re-election bid. The interview was printed Tuesday. According to the report, Eberstadt even said he could name the Cheong Wa Dae figure who was rooting against Bush during the U.S. presidential election.

About a possible intra-Korean summit, Eberstadt said the last summit meeting resulted in burdens too great for the Korean taxpayer, and if another summit were to take place, there should be no secret transactions between the two Koreas. About the six party talks, he was pessimistic, saying it appeared they would go on one more time.

Eberstadt is one of the foremost Korea experts in the United States.

About Eberstadt's claims, one high-ranking Cheong Wa Dae official said, "What utter rot!" He also said he could not understand what the background and intention on the Korea expert's comments were at a time when a bilateral summit meeting between Korea and the U.S. was scheduled for Nov. 20 in Santiago, Chile.
