Another plan is in the pipeline to establish special zones promoting regional specialties. The first of such zones is likely to be Sunchang County in North Jeolla Province. The southwestern region has long been known for its tasty Korean red-pepper paste, or gochujang.
The Ministry of Finance and Economy says it's reviewing measures to ease regulations as requested by the local government to designate Sunchang as a special zone for gochujang production.
Sunchang hopes the move will boost its annual turnover from the fiery pepper paste, currently standing at W30 billion, or US$27 million.
