One week after a new law banning prostitution went into effect, a prostitute in her 20s left a suicide note protesting the crackdown and attempted to kill herself.
At around 8 p.m. on Sept. 29, a brothel owner identified as Kim found an employee identified as Yoon after she attempted suicide. She had taken 20 sleeping tablets with alcohol and had collapsed in her room on the third floor of the brothel located in Hawolgok-dong, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul. Yoon was transferred to a nearby hospital. In a suicide note found in her room, Yoon says goodbye to her family and claims that she committed suicide because of the law against prostitution and argues that the government should acknowledge licensed prostitution.
