A Seoul high court decided on a compensation suit in favor of a 48-year-old plaintiff identified as Kim on Tuesday. Kim filed a suit against the Korea Labor Welfare, after his Achilles tendons had ruptured as he had cheerfully jumped when the Korean football team succeeded in advancing to Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup. Kim argued that his legs had weakened due to his usual work.
Kim, who was working with a garment manufacturer, arranged goods in the warehouse with his two coworkers on June 14 2002. While watching Korea¡¯s world Cup match, he was excited and leaped when Korea gain a victory. As a result, his Achilles tendons ruptured.
The bench said in its ruling that although his jumping while watching a football match had directly caused Kim¡¯s injury, there was a correlation between Kim¡¯s injury and his job, considering that he usually moved boxes weighing 30 to 40 kilograms for a considerable time and his workload was heavy at that time.
