Will Gochujang and Soybean Paste Become International Food Standards?
An international conference that will decided whether or not Ginseng products, Soybean Paste and Gochujang will be adopted as international food standards will be held from Monday to Thursday for four consecutive days in Korea.

Korea Food & Drug Administration announced that the 14th session of Codex Alimentarius Commission (CODEX) Commission will be held from 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Lotte Hotel in Jeju Island. During the conference, the acceptance of Gochujang and soybean pastes as international standards as proposed by Korea will be discussed.

If an international standard is selected for a specific cuisine, the food is regarded as an international dish, therefore reducing the possibility of receiving unnecessary sanctions and making it easier to earn quality certificates such as the "ISO-9001." Therefore, if an international standard for Gochujang is adopted, any food with the same ingredients must use Gochujang as its proper name.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has submitted a draft covering the main ingredients, making process, and sanitary basis of Gochujang and Soybean Paste, so that international standards for these food may be adopted. Until now, Kimchi is the only food that has succeeded in receiving an international standard, which it did in the year 2002.

Codex Alimentarius Commission has twenty one member countries in Asia including South Korea, Japan, and China and more than 200 representatives, including 80 government officials from 18 different countries, will be present at the conference.
