South Korea finished the final day of the 2004 Athens Olympics on a high note, adding one gold and a silver. The medals gave the country a ninth-place rank on the overall medal standings within the targeted top 10 finish.
A proud silver medal it is for the South Korean women's handball team. Defending champions of the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Team Korea lost their third potential Olympic championship title to Denmark.

During the Olympic women¡¯s handball final on Sunday, Korea¡¯s Lee Sang-eun put Danish defender out of the way and fires a shot. Denmark defeated Korea 38-36 on penalties to take the gold medal.

The game itself was a competitive one, as both teams battled through two nail-biting overtime rounds.
Drawing 34-34 until the end of the second extended time competition, Korea had to face a close call defeat, by two points, to Denmark in a penalty shoot out.
This win by Denmark marks the third victory since the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.

In Taekwondo, Moon Dae-sung won the gold in the men's over 80-kilogram category, against local favorite Alexandros Nikolaidis with a knockout.

Moon led the match from the very beginning. After gaining one point over his Greek rival with an offensive kick, the South Korean followed up with a kick against his opponent's head in the first round leaving Nikolaidis unconscious for a couple of minutes.
In the Olympic highlight event the men's marathon, South Korea's medal hopeful Lee Bong-ju finished 14th, by clocking in two hours 15 minutes and 33 seconds.
The victory went to Italy's Stefano Baldini, who crossed the finish line with a time of two hours 10 minutes and 55 seconds.
