Man Busted for Extortion Through Website Registration
A man in his twenties was arrested by police for threatening to register Internet address using the names of famous individuals like lawmakers, ministers and entertainers and link those sites to porn sites if the individuals did not give him money. Police revealed that he did not, in fact, receive any money.

Seoul Police's cyber crimes division arrested 25-year-old Mr. Lee of Daejeon on Saturday on the afore mentioned suspicions.

According to police, Lee went W70 million into debt last year due to poor stock investments and credit cards. In order to repay those debts, he registered a website named after a certain National Assembly member (in both English and Korean) and linked them with adult sites. The Assembly member came to know this fact later and asked Lee to give him the site, but Lee is suspected of having threatened the lawmaker in return, demanding W2~70 million.

Police said, ¡°After the additional inspection, it was confirmed that since last December, he had registered 191 other Internet addresses named after celebrities¡¯ and threatened their namesakes in the same way.¡±

The police said Lee registered the addresses in advance and advised the victims to buy the addresses back in order to help him pay off his debts and make his own website. When the victims refused, he even warned them, ¡°You should not ignore the power of the Internet.¡±

The police added, ¡°It costs only a maximum of W200,000 to enroll Korean/English Internet addresses. What is worse is that since there is no process of confirming real names, similar crimes could occur again.¡±
