NEW YORK -- "ImaginAsian," the first 24-hour Asian American television network in the United States, is to begin broadcasting soon, and as it plans to broadcast popular Korean dramas like "Damo - The Female Detective Of Chosun" and "All In," many hope the "Korean Wave" might start in earnest in the United States as well.
ImaginAsian Entertainment was established last June and opened a 24-hour cable TV station called "Imagine Asian TV" that specialized in Asian programs. It announced Thursday that broadcasting would start Monday.
Imagine Asian TV plans to introduce Korean pop culture, which is giving rise to the Korean Wave in Asian countries. The firm signed a contract to broadcast popular soap operas such as "Damo - The Female Detective Of Chosun," "All In" and "Stairway to Heaven." It also imported Korean movies such as "Address Unknown," "Hello, UFO" and "Season In The Sun."
The TV already succeeded in gathering more than 6 million viewers even before the start of broadcasting and will import and broadcast Korean pop music videos from music cable TV station "m.net," which may serve as a bridge for Korean musicians advancing into the United States.
Imagine Asian TV also made a sponsorship deals with Japan's NHK, Asahi TV, TBS, China's CCTV, Vietnam TV and other major TV broadcasting companies and movie distributors in Asia, so programs of those nations will be broadcasted as well.
The vice-president of Imagine Asian TV, David Chu, said, "Our TV is different from other international TV stations because we plan to organize movies and soap operas with other genres such as animations, music, documentaries, news and sports. English subtitles will be added to all the programs and we will make programs with special explanations to help viewers understand."
Imagine Entertainment opened a movie theater in Manhattan, New York on July 15 that specializes in Asian films.
As a part of a New York Korean Film Festival, "Memory of Murder," "A Good Lawyer," "My Little Bride" and other Korean movies were put on screen from August 13 to 19.
