ATHENS -- The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to provide active support to the formation of a joint South-North Korean Olympic team for the 2008 Beijing games.
IOC President Jacques Rogge held a meeting at the Divani Hotel in Athens with Lee Yeon-taek and Mun Jae-duck, the leaders of the South and North Korean Olympic committees, on Friday, during which the three agreed to officially submit the issue of a united team for debate in the IOC before athletes are chosen for the next games.
Lee held an interview in Team Korea House in Athens right after the meeting and said, "It is the first time that the issue of a united team for the two Koreas based on the precedent set by West and East Germany has been officially raised." He added," President Rogge decided to set the issue as a main agenda for the IOC.กฐ
The East and West German Olympic teams were united for the first time for the 1956 Melbourne Games, and until 1964 Tokyo games, they participated as a united team.
