Chung Myung-hwa (Cello), Chung Kyung-hwa (violin) and Chung Myung-whun (piano). The brother and sister threesome are famous as solo players and directors and they will perform together as the "Chung Trio."
The performance is a celebration of 86th birthday of their mother, who brought up the trio as world famous musicians.
The trio will start their tour on August 24 in Sendai and will hold a concert in Tokyo on the 26, Tong-yeong on August 30, Jeju on August 31, Deagu on Sept. 1, Busan on Sept. 2, and the last performance will be held in Seoul on Sept. 4. They will play Beethoven's "Ghost Trio," Shostakovich's "Piano Trio No.2" and Brahms' " Piano Trio in B Major."
"The best present for our mother is to let her see our combined performance. She brought us up as great musicians and did not compare our abilities, but respected each of us," said Chung Myung-hwa.
"I feel harmony in the comfort while the three of us play together. We control a performance by just looking at each other's eyes and we automatically feel that we are of the same blood," noted Chung Kyung-hwa.
"This year's Chung Trio's performance is their first since 1995. I would like to give a performance with love for our mother, who taught us to become great people before becoming musicians, " Chung Myung-whun said.
While the mother, Lee Won-suk, was fleeing to Busan during the Korean War, she did not forget to take the piano with her and her education of her children can best be described as "passionate."
She brought up seven children and three of them became great musicians. The mother notes that the key point of her education was "applause." Once she published a book called "Unfold your Dream," and the book inspired many parents who were bringing up future musicians. "Finding what your children feel happy doing," was the basic rule for her children's education and the book contains these kinds of stories.
"I was once under so much stress from practice that even my wrists were paralyzed. I uneasily told my mother, 'I want to quit playing the violin.' My mother instantly said, 'Quit it if you want.' With my mother¡¯s response, I myself came to thinking, 'Why should I quit violin?'" Chung Kyung-hwa, who lives in New York, said in an email interview, ¡°My mother made the atmosphere where I myself can choose and do what I want. She let me not do what I didn¡¯t like.¡±
Myung-hwa, the eldest of the Chung Trio and a professor at the Korean National University of Arts, said, ¡°My mother told me not to worry about mistakes because I can practice again and again if I play wrong. Her encouragement has been the most influential stimulus and incentive to me.¡±
Immediately after the performance from the Chung Trio, Chung Myung-whun will lead the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, where he is the musical director and will then conduct the opera ¡°Carmen,¡± a joint production of Korea, France and Japan, from September 7 to 9.
