LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that North Korea had recently sent a letter to U.N Secretary-General Kofi Annan urging the U.N to dissolve the U.N Command on the Korean Peninsula and press for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from South Korea, saying that the U.S.¡¯ hostile policies toward it would unavoidably bring war on the peninsula.
According to the newspaper, the North made the argument in the form of a letter, which was sent in the name of Gen. Ri Chan-bok, the head of North Korea's representative at the Korean War truce village, Panmunjom, and urged the U.N. to reply.
Spokesperson for the U.N. headquarters Farhan Haq said that the secretary-general was aware of the letter, but didn¡¯t think he had formally received it. The U.N. Command is not a U.N. peacekeeping force, but a U.S.-led force, and therefore, the North¡¯ demand aims to drive U.S. forces out of the Korean Peninsula, added the spokesperson.
North Korea¡¯s official Korea Central News Agency reported Tuesday that Pyongyang had sent the letter to the U.N secretary-general, the Los Angeles Times reported.
