Korea, China, Japan to Prepare Joint Technology Standard
Korea, China and Japan have decided to consolidate their mutual cooperation by preparing a joint technology standard in order to take the initiative in the global information and technology field.

The Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-jae and his Chinese and Japanese counterparts, Wang Shui tung and Aso Taro, held the third ministerial meeting in Sapporo on Monday and agreed to upgrade the existing trilateral IT minister meeting to a standing East Asia Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Summit.

Up to now, the three countries have cooperated in the form of annual ministerial talks. But in line with the agreement, centered on a standing secretariat (a negotiating body for international cooperation,) public officials and related experts from the three countries will take part in and deal with the three countries¡¯ eight joint pending issues, like radio frequency identification (RFID), next generation telecommunications and digital TV.

For example, in the case of the RFID that wirelessly and automatically handles cargo by adhering a chip on container boxes, if the three countries adopt individual standards, it may cause chaos. Therefore, the three countries will seek a compatible way through the standing organization.

Minister Jin said that the agreement to establish a standing negotiating body would serve as an opportunity for the three countries¡¯ private companies as well as the governments to remarkably strengthen their cooperation. The status of the three Northeastern Asian countries would be enhanced in the global IT market, the minister said.
