Japan and North Korea are moving to hold working-level talks around mid-August to further discuss the issue of Japanese citizens who were abducted by North Korean agents decades ago. According to the Japanese daily newspaper, Asahi, the two sides have tentatively set the date for August 10th.
At issue, the fate of 10 missing Japanese citizens who Tokyo says were kidnapped by North Korean agents in the 1970s and 80s in addition to Japan's humanitarian assistance to the North. But, ways to establish diplomatic relations are not likely to be on the agenda.
Japan had initially planned on resuming normalization talks in August but decided to put those plans off by at least a month to observe developments on the abduction issue and the nuclear standoff.
