Related to the reports from China's state-operated media that, "Goguryeo was a local government of China,¡± Park Heung-shin of the Foreign Affairs Ministry's cultural diplomacy desk said, ¡°We will request that the Chinese government first clarify whether such reports reflect the official position of the Chinese government and come up with countermeasures afterwards.¡±
Park said, ¡°The Korean government can never approve of attempts to include Goguryeo as part of Chinese history.¡± The Korean government has been directly avoiding a response to the Chinese academic world¡¯s attempts to include the histories of minority peoples around China as part of their own history. However, the Korean government will strongly cope with the situation if the Chinese government shows such attempts.
While reporting that UNESCO¡¯s World Heritage Committee (WHC) decided to add Goguryeo sites, Xinhua News Agency, People¡¯s Daily and other newspapers said, ¡°Goguryeo was an ethnic minority government,¡± and ¡°Goguryo was a subordinate state that fell under the jurisdiction of Chinese dynasties, and was under great political and cultural influence from China.¡±
