Negative public sentiment about the additional dispatch to Iraq is on the rise with the kidnapping of Kim Sun-il by an armed group in Iraq. The portal site Naver.com conducted an emergency Internet vote on the additional dispatch of Korean troops to Iraq. 63.2 percent of the total 1,612 respondents answered that they oppose it while 33.2 percent supported the dispatch.
In the survey conducted last October, 48.6 percent supported the dispatch while 47.4 percent opposed it, with those in the lead slightly in the lead. However, those opposed to the dispatch have increased over 15 percent, while supporters have decreased by similar percentages.
In the vote conducted by Yahoo! Korea (yahoo.co.kr) from April 14 to 24, more people supported the dispatch -- 47 percent answered that the promise to send the Korean army must be kept, 25 percent replied that there should be changes in the timing and 26 percent answered that the dispatch should be cancelled.
However, the numerical values were reversed in a survey conducted Friday, in which 63 percent of respondents opposed the deployment and 32 percent approved the dispatch. The interim findings of the survey conducted by Daum.net also showed that the percentage of respondents supporting the withdrawal of the dispatch exceeded those who support the dispatch -- 76.1 percent felt the deployment plan should be withdrawn while 19 percent answered that it should proceed.
A Yahoo Korea official said, ¡°I think that a large number of the respondents who supported the dispatch plan considering the relations with the United States are changing their minds while realizing the possibilities of human loss through the kidnapping of Kim Sun-il.¡±
