Male Office Workers in the 30s Most Likely Subway Gropers
It looks like professional career women taking subway line 2 at Sadang Station during busy hours must beware of suspicious office workers in their 30s, who would not hesitate to put their hands on women. Korean Institute of Criminology research committeeman Hwang Ji-tae said Sunday that most of the sexual criminal offenders in the subway were mostly male office workers in their 30s without any criminal records, according to the research data collected from 700 victims taking the subway above the age of 15, along with police statistics.

The research report said that 50.3 percent of sexual offenders in the subway were found to be in their 30s, of which 40.4 percent had white collar jobs. Moreover, 56.2 percent of the culprits were first-timers. In addition, the research showed that most victims of sexual crimes in the subway were found to be professional career women living near the Gangnam area.

Looking at the crime rates per subway line, line 2 ranked the highest with 39.9 percent, closely followed by line 1 with 26.3 percent, line 4 with 12.8 percent and line 3 with 4.4 percent. Subway stations with the highest sexual crime rates were Sadang, Sindorim, Cheongnyangni and Jongno 3ga. Hwang said that as most sexual crimes in subway trains occur at busy hours, the best way to prevent the misdemeanor is to encourage victims to immediately file reports.
