USFK reported Friday that they have decided to deploy an additionally 16 units (2 batteries) of the brand new PAC-2 and PAC-3 Patriot surface-to-air-missiles in Gwangju aerodrome.
In order to command the two battalions, U.S. forces are also planning to relocate the 550-strong 35th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, currently satationed at Fort Bliss, Texas, to Osan.
An official said, ¡°the deployment of the Patriot is part of the plan to strengthen U.S. war potential in Korea within the next 3 years, which will cost about US$11billion, and also a preparation for the nuclear threat of North Korea.
Since 1994, 48 units of Patriot missiles have been deployed in Suwon, Osan and Gunsan airbases.
