WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The National Geographic Society (NGS), an American map producing company acknowledged around the world, announced Friday that both "East Sea¡± and ¡°Sea of Japan¡± will be recorded as the name of the sea between Korea and Japan from the 8th edition of its Atlas of the World, which is scheduled to be sold from this coming October.
Representatives of the East Sea Research Institute, including head Lim Jin-hyun visited the NGS in Washington D.C., and announced the news at a press conference they held with correspondents on Friday. According to the representatives, the sea was marked only as the ¡°Sea of Japan¡± in the 7th edition of the World Atlas published in 1999, but from the 8th edition, it will be also marked as the ¡°East Sea¡± in parenthesis. The World Atlas is revised once every 5 to 10 years.
The world map on the NGS¡¯s website already marks the sea as both the ¡°Sea of Japan¡± and the ¡°East Sea.¡± The research institute representatives said the NGS will mark the sea as ¡°East Sea¡± while putting the name ¡°Sea of Japan¡± in parenthesis on the map of Korea.
Meanwhile, the Dokdo Islets are marked as ¡°Dokdo¡± in big letters on the Korea map, and the Japanese title ¡°Takeshima¡± and ¡°Liancourt Rocks¡±-- the name after the French ship that first discovered the islets -- are marked in parenthesis as well. Representatives also said the explanation ¡°Administered by South Korea, claimed by Japan¡±is written on the map.
