Uri Dominates General Election; Secures Parliamentary Majority
In the 17th National Assembly election, the Uri Party secured itself a parliamentary majority, while the Grand National Party (GNP) slipped from being the largest to the second largest party in the country. The Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) and the United Liberal Democrats (ULD) failed to form parliamentary negotiating bodies, while the Democratic Labor Party (DLP) will make its presence felt in the National Assembly.

Of the 243 electoral districts nationwide, the Uri Party took 129 and the GNP 100. The MDP won in 5, the ULD in 4, the LDP in 2 and National Unity 21 1. Smaller parties and independents took 2 districts. Of the 56 seats given out to parties based on proportional voting, the Uri Party took 23, the GNP 21, the MDP 4, the ULD 0 and the LDP 8.

With leftist parties like the Uri Party and the DLP virtually seizing control of the National Assembly, big changes in the nation¡¯s lawmaking and political structure. Moreover, female candidates are expected to win in 10 districts and another 30 to be selected for proportional representation seats.

Regional confrontation made a comeback, however, with the ruling party dominating in the western regions of the country and the opposition dominating in the east.
