U.S. Troops to Relinquish Military Outpost Along DMZ
The U.S. military will end 50 years of patrols along the heavily fortified inter-Korean border later this year letting South Korea take up a greater role in its defense.

U.S. military officials say the move is part of its forces reshuffle on the divided peninsula.

Under the plan, South Korea will replace all U.S. personnel responsible for security patrols and observation posts along the 4-kilometer wide Demilitarized Zone, however U.S. forces will continue to assume guard duties at the truce village of Panmunjeom.

A spokeswoman for U.S. Forces Korea, Lieutenant Colonel Deborah Bertrand explains South Korea and the U.S. have yet to decide on the detailed timing of Outpost Ouellette's handover and the eventual U.S. troop posture inside the joint security area.
