Since the National Assembly voted to impeach President Roh, the president has been flooded with personal e-mails from citizens pledging their support and asking him to remain strong.
Cheong Wa Dae posted on its Internet homepage Sunday that "in the two week period between the impeachment vote on March 12 and March 26, citizens have sent a total of about 12,700 e-mails to the President Roh, encouraging and supporting him."
Most of the letters say things like, "Since the people are behind you, don't lose your courage," "Be strong, Mr. President. Fighting!" and "Please be tough and get through this crisis."
In particular, the 24 hours following Roh's impeachment in the afternoon of March 12 witnessed a flood of about 3,500 e-mails with messages like, "You are the citizens' power, their candle," "No matter what anyone says, you're the president selected by the people," "My friend, my family will become your strength," and "The people's faith, which it more precious that 100-year old winter ginseng, is with you."
Moreover, the president received e-mail running the gamut from intimate feelings like, "This is the first time I have cried over a political issue," to expressions of fury like, "I'm sorry that I went out with my friends during the general elections four years ago. I didn't know that my disinterest would come back to me today as heart-wrenching pain and shame."
The e-mail has come from people of all walks of life, such as housewives, office workers, religious figures, students from elementary school to university and local civil servants. They have also come from all places, too, from villages along the DMZ to ethnic Koreans living in such far away places like New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Germany and the United States.
The president usually gets about 100 e-mails a day.
