North Korean refugees are opposing their forced repatriation to North Korea, and among them, seven are in danger of perishing as they enter their third week of refusing food. The Chinese government is taking a harsh stand on this and resistance from the North Korean strikers is becoming more volatile and gruesome.
Many North Korean civilians and even high-ranking officials are detained in this repatriation camp, which is situated just outside of Tumen. As if crying out for help, the very walls of the detention rooms are covered in blood writings by North Koreans who have been repatriated, frightening any newly arriving refugees. The repatriation camp is so full of despair that North Korean refugees can do nothing but leave behind traces of a struggle.
How long will the Chinese government continue its program of forced repatriation while North Koreans make desperate pleas for survival? If the group resistance continues until it results in the death of a striker, the Chinese government will not avoid international criticism declaring China an anti-humanitarian nation. Again such a disastrous situation would only damage China¡¯s image as a great power. That is why in the end China has always stepped up to settle issues with North Korean refugees, although the Chinese government initially imposed strict controls.
Especially in this case where the North Korea refugees are resisting in such an urgent manner, the Chinese government must exercise great care and quickly find solutions for them. In addition to this, the South Korean government must also do its best to negotiate with China to allow North Koreans to enter South Korean territory freely. If we forget about the North Korean strikers just because our nation is in the midst of an impeachment crisis and the general election, there is no way these North Korean refugees can escape with their lives.
