The Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) announced that it had launched a special investigation of a number of employees of the Presidential Truth Commission on Suspicious Deaths who issued a statement opposing to the impeachment of President Roh Moo-hyun. The BAI has assigned six employees to investigate whether the Presidential Commission officials violated the National Public Service Law that bans political groups and political acts by public service workers. An official at the BAI said on Sunday that, ˇ°Since the violation of the National Public Service Law is obvious and the employees themselves have revealed their guilt, disciplinary measures, including dismissal, seem inevitable.ˇ± The BAI will hold an audit committee meeting on Thursday to announce the results of the investigation and decide on an appropriate punishment.
Acting President Goh Kun called the chairman of BAI, Jeon Yun-Churl, on Saturday and requested an ˇ°Objective, prompt, and accurate investigation on the employees of the Presidential Commission for bringing on public criticism for their group actions.ˇ± The prime minister's senior press officer, Kim Duk-bong, delivered the message that ˇ°Acting President Goh thought the group's actions broached official discipline at a sensitive time, and he was very concerned about the situation.ˇ±
The BAI's Chairman, commenting on the matter, said ˇ°I will investigate thoroughly so there will not be any damage to the political neutrality of public officials,ˇ± emphasizing his intention to deal strictly with any violation of the neutrality of public employees in the run-up to the general elections.
