Police are investigating a package containing death threats towards Hwang Jang-yop and a picture of Hwang pierced by a butcher's knife delivered to the North Korean Defectors¡¯ Association in Garak-dong, Songpa, Seoul around 9:00 a.m. on Monday. Hwang is the honorary chairman of the North Korean Defectors¡¯ Association in South Korea and also the former secretary of North Korea's Workers' Party.

The 34 centimeters long and 29 centimeters wide picture contained a paragraphs with a death threats towards Kim Deok-hong, former president of a North Korean trade company who defected to South Korea with Hwang in 1997, and Goh Yeong-hwan, former first secretary of the North Korean Embassy to the Congo and now a reunification policy researcher in Seoul. The letter, titled "Brace yourself, Hwang Jang-yop, the traitor of the people," stated the following: "Hwang has repaid North Korean love and trust with betrayal by grumbling about matters such as human rights and devising a plot against the North by planning to visit Japan." A member of the group said, ¡°It seems to have been carried out by North Korea related organizations that fear that the actual conditions of North Korea being known, as Hwang recently raised the issue of North Korean human rights.¡±
