Samsung Edges Out Motorola For 2nd Place in Handset Sales

Samsung Electronics unseated U.S. based Motorola as the worldĄŻs de facto second-biggest firm in the handset market according to a result released by market research firm Strategy Analytics(SA). SA said Samsung raked in US$11.08 billion in 2003 global handset sales, surpassing Motorola with US$10.9.

In market share, however, Samsung remained in the third spot behind Nokia and Motorola. Meanwhile LG Electronics surpassed Japanese-Swedish joint venture Sony Ericsson for the fifth spot in the global handset market share.
The Intenna Camera-phone (Model: SPH-E3200), which Samsung Electronics released on January 28. The phone is unique in that antenna is built in the phone's body. It was first launched in Germany in August 2003, and found great popularity in Europe and the United States. /Yonhap
Worldwide handset sales recorded 517 million units in which Nokia accounted for 34.8 percent (179.8 million units), followed by Motorola with 14.5 percent (75.1 million units) and Samsung with 10.8 percent (55.7 million units.), SA said. German engineering conglomerate Siemens posted 8.4 percent (43.3 million units) while LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson recorded 5.3 percent and 5.2 percent respectively.

Compared with 2002, Nokia and Motorola witnessed a decrease in market share while two leading Korean mobile phone makers, Samsung and LG Electronics, enjoyed increased market shares. SA also noted that Chinese consumer electronics and mobile-phone maker TCL Corp posted a market share of 1.8 percent, making it among the worldĄŻs top ten handset maker for the first time.

The figures demonstrate the fact that Samsung, armed with a luxurious brand image and state of the art technology, has a competitive edge in profit margin over Motorola as Samsung recorded more sales despite less units sold, said an official with Samsung Electronics.
