Uri Party Backs Iraq Deployment Bill
The Uri Party announced Thursday that it will accept the government's decision to dispatch combat troops to Iraq. With this, it seems that the troop dispatch bill will likely pass a National Assembly vote on Friday. Earlier, the Uri Party, which called for sending non-combatant troops, tried to stop the bill from entering the National Assembly.

Although the government and the party had come to different conclusions about the troop dispatch, the Uri Party changed its party line and decided to assent to the government's position, Kim Boo-kyum, the deputy representative of Uri Party, said Thursday after a party meeting. He added that the alliance between Korea and the United States and the fact that the Uri Party must now act as the ruling party were pointers reflected upon in the final decision.

The party will request that the government be clear on the fact that dispatch troops would strictly carry out peace reconstruction duties and humanitarian programs, Kim said.

Reportedly, several Millennium Democratic Party lawmakers are lodging a protest, while the Grand National Party supports the government bill. (Kim Hong-jin, mailer@chosun.com )
