The government vowed to create 300,000 jobs in the field of information technology by 2007. The plan is to build up national momentum for IT development.

Minister of Information and Communications Chin Dae-je announced the goal Monday in a monthly press conference. He also predicted that Korea would reach US$70 billion in IT exports this year, up 22 percent from last year.

ˇ°We are pitching a specific road map to generate 300,000 job openings in IT sector,ˇ± Chin said. ˇ°For the first step, we will pour 47 billion won this year into the establishment of a data base of knowledge-information resources, requiring 2,000 new jobs.ˇ±

Chin called mobile phones, memory chips and computer-related items the ˇ°driving forceˇ± to bring offshore shipments this year to US$70 billion.

The ˇ°driving forceˇ± total would amount to one-third of the nation's total exports; the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy predicted around US$200 billion worth of exports for this year.
