Departing Minister Urges Path of 'Realism'
In an address following his decision to resign as Foreign Minister on Thursday, Yoon Young-kwan said that Korea finds itself in certain international relationships, and it must first recognize those relationships and then determine, realistically, where its national interests begin and end.

Yoon said that in international politics, balance is important, and one must think of the relations between nations, and those between the countries that surround the Korean Peninsula. One should not be biased in one way or the other, he said, and must maintain a careful perspective.

He said that only if the nation¡¯s goals are clear could Korean diplomacy be independent. Korea must first recognize international power relationships, he said, and then consider where its national interests begin and end from a realistic perspective.

Yoon said that while a certain Assembly member criticized him for his ¡°diplomacy of revering America,¡± in the mid-to-long term, one must set goals and work within the relationships of those countries surrounding Korea. He also said that when our goals become clear, we can be independent.
