Prosecutors to Summon More Assembly Members

5 More Lawmakers Arrested after Chyung
Election Fund Investigation Knocks on Daewoo¡¯s Door
The Seoul District Prosecutor¡¯s Office said Saturday that it is investigating allegations that Daewoo Construction & Engineering Co. set aside W30 billion (US$25.3 million) in slush funds for provision to politicians during the 2002 presidential election campaign and for bribes to acquire contracts.

The prosecutors, who arrested Uri party lawmaker Chyung Dai-chul on Friday for allegedly having illegally received W300 million of money from Daewoo Construction, also decided to summon another two or three lawmakers who received over W10 million from the construction company. The prosecution also said among the lawmakers, one received the money in exchange for a promise to facilitate acquiring contracts, and that the prosecutors are planning to file a bribery charge rather than political fund law violation charge against that lawmaker.

The prosecution also added that it is investigating the allegations that Daewoo Construction had provided W1 billion to the Grand National Party (GNP) and W700 to 800 million to the Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) during the 2002 presidential election. They would soon summon related persons, they added.

Meanwhile, sources with the prosecution said that two lawmakers, one from both of the two major political parties, received the money. In relation, the prosecution said they have found evidence that Chyung had received W100 million to W200 million from another company.

The Seoul District Prosecutor¡¯s Office, meanwhile, is considering a plan to move the Daewoo case to the Supreme Prosecutor¡¯s Office, currently investigating the illegal fundraising campaign during the 2002 presidential election, for reasons of efficiency. (Lee Jin-suk, island@chosun.com )
