Korea is on the road to becoming the country with the highest divorce rate in the world as recent studies indicate almost 50 percent of married couples split up last year.
According to a report released by the Ministry of Health and Welfare this Sunday, the country's divorce rate posted 47.4 percent in 2002 meaning almost one in every two married couples went their separate ways.
The alarming rate is comparable to that of the United States at 51 percent and 48 percent in Sweden.
Findings also showed the nation's divorce rate has risen sharply over the past 10 years compared to 11.4 percent recorded in 1990.
In particular, the data found more couples broke up during the Asian financial crisis in the late 1990s hinting that economic burden may have played a crucial role in dissolving family ties.
