Choe Vows to Retire if GNP Loses in General Elections
Choe Byung-ryul, the chairman of the Grand National Party (GNP), said Sunday that if his party cannot keep its position as the National Assembly's largest party after facing off with the Uri Party, closely back by President Roh Moo-hyun, in next year's general election, he will retire from politics.

Appearing on an SBS current events television program, Choe said that his party's goal during the 17th General Elections was to secure its parliamentary majority. He said he would ˇ°put his words into action.ˇ±

Discussing the investigations into illegal campaign contributions, Choe expressed disbelief that the five largest conglomerates didn't give ˇ°one red centˇ± to Roh's campaign, and said it was impossible to figure out whether the investigations were avoiding Roh or whether the investigators had covered things up. He said that during the campaign, public opinion polls put Roh ahead after his campaign merged with that of rival Chung Mong-jun, and it was impossible for anyone to believe that the conglomerates would not give money to the side that was most likely to win.

Choe said that in a situation where investigators might find results that would force the president to retire, introducing a special investigator is the right thing to do. He also noted that while it might take about a month for the parties to discuss the naming of a special prosecutor, he was not convinced by arguments that such discussions would interfere with investigations underway now.

Discussing the handling of plans to make possible the arrest of National Assemblymen, Choe said that he personally felt that the National Assembly shouldn't earn criticism as "bullet-proof," He added that there are plans to ˇ°normalize the issue.ˇ± (An Yong-hyun, agon@chosun.com )
