Iraqi Official, "Kirkuk Welcomes S.Korean Troops"
The northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk is a candidate area for South Korea's additional troop deployment and the local government says it welcomes South Korean soldiers.

Kirkuk's governor Abdul Rahman Mustafa said Thursday he hopes that South Korean troops will help maintain security and support reconstruction, medical and other humanitarian efforts there.

He noted that Iraqis would actively support South Korean troops' operations because they know that South Korea has no imperialist motives.

Governor Mustafa added the region desperately needs to be rebuilt after undergoing much damage and destruction under the Saddam Hussein regime.

Seoul finalized a plan this week to send up to three thousand soldiers to Iraq in addition to some 700 medical and engineering personnel already there.
