The government said Friday that it would take measures to deal with China¡¯s historical claims to an ancient Korean in ways that would not affect the two country¡¯s diplomatic relations.
The government is reportedly preparing to deliver its concerns to China by saying that China¡¯s claim over the ancient Goguryeo Kingdom could cause a serious diplomatic conflict. In the ¡°Tongpeikongcheong¡± project on ancient Northeast Asian history, Chinese historians claimed that Goguryeo, which extended into the northern region of the Korean Peninsula, was part of China.
The government made proposals to host an international academic fair and to have the Ministry of Education, the Cultural Properties Administration, and the Korea Foundation be placed in charge. The government also said that if necessary it would send a historian of Goguryeo studies to China.
Millennium Democratic Party lawmaker Shim Jae-kwon and Grand National Party lawmaker Kwon Oh-eul, including 25 other lawmakers from both parties, submitted a resolution to the National Assembly demanding that China stop distorting Northeast Asian history.
The resolution pointed out that China¡¯s ¡°Tongpeikongcheong¡± project is intended to portray ancient Goguryeo as a part of Chinese history, and also said that China is trying to rob 700 years of Korean history, which could seriously damage Korea¡¯s roots and heritage.
The resolution insisted that the Korean government protest the Chinese government¡¯s distortion of Goguryeo history and that the Korean government work together with North Korea to solve this issue.
