Korean Shipbuilders Sail Past Japan to Top Market
Korea is expected to sail past Japan in taking the lead in the shipbuilding industry. Japan has been the number one recipient of shipbuilding orders for the last two years.

Clarkson Research, a British research firm, said Wednesday that Korea earned 13.6 million compensated gross tons (CGT) in shipbuilding order in the first three quarters of this year, surpassed Japan, which had only 8.9 million CGT in orders. China followed in third place with 3.9 million CGT and the European Union with 3.3 million CGT.

Korea also dominates the market share, at 43.9 percent, while Japan recorded 28.7 percent, China 12.6 percent, and Europe 10.6 percent. Last year, Japan topped the industry with 8 million CGT; Korea had 6.9 million CGT.

Korea¡¯s total CGT was buoyed by orders for large container ships and liquefied natural gas (LNG) ships, core manufacturing items for the country. Japan and China focus on producing bulk ships, which are easier to make.

The industry expects the total amount of shipbuilding orders for this entire year to be 16 million CGT. (Cho Hyung-rae, hrcho@chosun.com )
